Flippyknows Blogger\'s NightFlippyknows – “Because Filipinos Know”

Flippyknows is an online and on-site community where Filipinos all over the world converge to share creativity and technology with each other.

Flippyknows is the combination of two words. The first word is Flip - Originally a derogatory term used for Filipinos by US soldiers that meant Funny Little Island People.  But today it has a different meaning.

Today we embrace our funnyness, our littleness, and our island-peopleness. Today we will not be let down by some silly term. Today we are proud to be Flip. Today we are Flip! Today we are Flipino! The second word is Knows or Knowledge. Knowledge because there is no better way to learn creativity and technology but through knowledge. Particularly knowledge shared.

Nityalila and Paul ZialciataWhile others meet weekly for their airsoft games, yoga classes, or book clubs, the Flippyknows community converge weekly to collaborate and share knowledge in creativity and technology. We’ve hosted nights where participants  volunteered  to facilitate sessions on Adobe Photoshop, Digital Music Production, Flash, CSS, Web Hosting, Web Design, Video Editing, Vector Art and at an instance where one participant even shared how to play the Berimbau, a Brazilian instrument used in Capoeira. For the coming weeks, we will be sharing knowledge on Digital photography, Basic Cinematic Techniques, Blogging, Creative Commons, Digital Distribution, Paypal, Youtube and whatever the participants can share. The sky is the limit when it comes to creativity and technology, and what’s important is we share knowledge with every Filipino.

NityalilaMiko PepitoFlippyknows is the brainchild of Miko Pepito and Nityalila Saulo. It started with the name “Flippynose” that was meant to be launched as a Filipino inspired clothing wear back in 2003 by Miko. Early this year, Nityalila was developing a movement that would involve building communities on creativity and technology. The two soon realized that the name “Flippynose” turned “Flippyknows” was perfect for the said movement.

Flippyknows believes in a “grass roots” approach in handling creativity and technology, that building and belonging in communities is a key aspect in how we take on life in this age of a virtual world-turned-reality. The internet is such a powerful tool that walls or barriers are being brought down, and with so much space, we find ourselves in search for others with the same beliefs, rituals, etc, which we call tribes. We are back in that age, where we all need communities and our tribes. That’s why social networking sites and forums are so big online, because that’s where we find our tribes.

Nityalila Saulo is an Awit Award Nominee, singer-songwriter and musician with an album out now in the market called, “Ako’y Isang Pinay”, under Manna Records. (www.nityalila.com).

Miko Pepito is a spoken word artist, music producer and improv actor. His self-titled debut album is distributed digitally under Bagani Music. (http://mikopepito.multiply.com)

Flip the Mic with Paul ZialcitaFlippyknows happens every other Friday of the month, 8PM at My Little Art Place on Wilson St., San Juan City, where participants freely share their tips and techniques on creativity and technology with each other. At 11PM, we “Flip the Mic” with an open mic session, encouraging singer-songwriters, poets, writers, spoken word performers, comedians, magicians, anyone, to share their pieces.
